While many of Victoria’s smaller regional towns grapple with the so-called ‘rural decline’, Ararat Rural City continues to enjoy a stable population base.

Over the past decade, Ararat’s population has remained steady, however with major projects in the system this is expected to increase by between two and five per cent – well above the region’s growth rate.

Close to 20 per cent of Ararat’s workforce is employed in the agriculture/forestry sector. More than 15 per cent are working in retail with around 13 per cent in manufacturing and 12 per cent in health care and social assistance. Construction and transport and storage are also important industries in this region.
