Ararat Rural City is a large regional centre 198 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.
Industry here is flourishing and a burgeoning manufacturing sector, an internationally acclaimed wine industry, agriculture and fine wool production and forestry are all underscored by vibrant retail and service industries.
More than $500 million worth of public and private investment has been flagged for this region over the next four years. These large scale capital investments are likely to generate many new jobs and add another $400 million in flow-on effects to the regional economy.
Latest estimates suggest Ararat can expect around 100 new residents each year, injecting some $1.6 million into the local economy annually.
To help cope with this rapid expansion, Ararat Rural City Council recently opened a second, 12-lot serviced industrial park close to the Western Highway. This development features unique onsite water harvesting for use of property owners.
All of this development takes place within the clean and green environment for which Ararat has become renowned. Ararat Rural City has passed Level 5 on the Cities for Climate Protection scale – an achievement that is testament to the Council’s focus on lessening its energy usage and carbon outputs.
In 2003, the Council approved the Challicum Hills Windfarm, paving the way for a full zoned renewable energy park. A diverse range of other programs and green initiatives is evidence of Council’s enduring commitment to creating a healthier, sustainable environment in which to work and live.
